Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie from just over eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff win against Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
Rai started the final round with a one-shot lead over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last green.
Play-Off Climax
That led to a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

Other Contenders
Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to do, coming up one shot short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
