A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
