The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
