Chelsea's Manager Enzo Maresca Calls Lead-Up Period as The 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' with the Club

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca revealed that the run-up to the weekend's victory against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" since his arrival with the London club.

The 44-year-old offered a somewhat cryptic message in his after-game media briefing despite earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those crucial points lifted Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps improving the mood after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's winless run to four fixtures.

But, when questioned about Gusto's assist and overall display, Maresca surprisingly divulged his frustration over the preceding two days within the organization.

"How the players are eager to learn has been superb and this is the reason why I commend them - because with so many issues, they are excelling after a difficult week," he commented.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the previous 48 hours have been the toughest because several people withheld support from us."

When pushed further on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City manager continued: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When asked if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before specifying when queried if it was aimed at fans or the media: "I adore the fans and we are extremely happy with the fans."

Injury and Suspension Crisis

Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's persistent fitness and disciplinary problems, remarking they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, in addition to being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and striker Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.

"I truly commend the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, no matter who is on the pitch, they are doing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer there, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season minus our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to appreciate because the work from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's success over Everton strengthened their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Uncertainty Over Maresca's Comments

It was not immediately clear who or what prompted Maresca to describe the previous 48 hours as the worst of his spell as Chelsea head coach.

In that window, the Italian had traveled back with his backroom team and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at the training ground, attended a pre-match press briefing where he appeared relaxed, and engineered a victory over an high-flying Everton side.

It was unclear whether any particular media reports had irked him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something more significant from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue involving the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
