Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Study Finds.
The US region famous for its historical past, maple syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is undergoing a swift change. Fresh analysis shows that New England is warming faster than nearly any other place on the planet.
Unprecedented Pace of Transformation
The velocity of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the continental United States, according to the study. The pace of its temperature rise has apparently increased notably in the past five years.
"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's speeding up," explained a lead researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is shifting in a new direction, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The analysis places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming zones in the world, alongside the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the scientist added.
Analysis Approach and Results
For the analysis, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of the New England region.
They discovered that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the worldwide mean, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"This represents very fast heating, which is alarming," commented the study author.
Notable Warming Trends
- Minimum temperatures are rising faster than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are heating up at double the speed of other seasons.

Marine Influences and the "Heat Battery"
A major cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are absorbing more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy trapped by emissions.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is directing warmer water into the coastal waters, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.
"The excess heat from climate change is being held in the oceans like a massive storage unit," said the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the atmosphere and New England is a recipient of that heat."
Consequences on Culture and Weather
Once seen as a relatively stable region, New England has suffered extreme climate events in recent years, including devastating flooding and extended drought.
The rising heat poses a threat to cherished aspects of regional life:
- Syrup production is facing challenges by changing climate conditions.
- Cold-weather activities are impacted; an ice hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been called off or relocated repeatedly due to a lack of ice.
- Ski resorts have struggled because of insufficient snow.
"I live just outside Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds regularly," said the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much disappeared from large parts of the southern part of the region."
