The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
