Heat and Trail Blazers Secure First Victories After Player Detentions
The Miami Heat recorded 86 opening half scores versus the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat secured a crushing 146 to 114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA game since player Rozier was detained over suspected illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained in connection with a broad FBI investigation into sports betting. The two individuals deny the allegations.
However, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six opening half scores to be ahead of Memphis by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year history.
Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later stated Rozier had the support of the team.
"We support him. Full support," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces this."
Portland also won their first game since the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139 to 119 win over the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Arrests
Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the game," he told a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver further mentioned an league probe into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he played for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.
"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and investigating."
