Reports indicate that original stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are returning to their iconic characters in the latest chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The project is now in the works.
A Major Return to Panem
Lawrence and Hutcherson are slated to play Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, respectively. It is believed their roles will take the form of a flash-forward sequence, considering the main film series concluded with their characters living in peace.
This marks the sixth installment in the global Hunger Games franchise.
The Source Material
Sunrise on the Reaping draws its story from a 2025 novel by author Suzanne Collins. It acts as the follow-up prequel after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Returning to the director's chair is Francis Lawrence, who has helmed most of the previous films in the series.
A New Era in Panem
The film's story are set 24 years before the first Hunger Games, focusing on a young Haymitch Abernathy. Haymitch, who would later become Katniss's mentor, is featured as a tribute in the deadly 50th Hunger Games.
