Treasury Chief Reeves Plans Focused Action on Living Costs in Forthcoming Financial Plan

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has revealed she is preparing "specific measures to tackle cost of living challenges" in next month's financial statement.

Speaking to the BBC, she emphasized that lowering inflation is a joint responsibility of both the government and the Bank of England.

The United Kingdom's price growth is forecast to be the most elevated among the G7 advanced economies this calendar year and the following year.

Potential Energy Bill Measures

Reports indicate the government could intervene to bring down energy bills, such as by slashing the current 5% rate of VAT applied on energy supplies.

Another option is to cut some of the government charges currently included in household expenses.

Budgetary Constraints and Analyst Predictions

The administration will receive the latest assessment from the official forecaster, the Office for Budget Responsibility, on Monday, which will reveal how much scope there is for these measures.

The expectation from most experts is that Reeves will have to introduce tax rises or spending cuts in order to meet her declared fiscal targets.

Earlier on Thursday, estimates suggested there was a twenty-two billion pound shortfall for the Treasury chief to resolve, which is at the more modest range of projections.

"It is a collective task between the Bank of England and the government to continue tackling some of the causes of inflation," Reeves stated to reporters in Washington, at the conferences of the International Monetary Fund and global financial institution.

Tax Pledges and Global Concerns

While a great deal of the focus has been on expected tax increases, the chancellor said the latest information from the fiscal watchdog had not altered her vow to campaign commitments not to raise tax levels on income tax, sales tax or National Insurance.

She blamed an "uncertain world" with increasing international and commercial concerns for the Budget revenue measures, likely to be targeted on those "with the broadest shoulders."

International Trade Tensions

Addressing concerns about the UK's commercial links with China she said: "The UK's national security invariably are paramount."

Last week's announcement by China to tighten trade restrictions on critical minerals and other materials that are essential for high-technology production led US President Donald Trump to suggest an additional 100% import tax on imports from the Asian country, raising the prospect of an all-out trade war between the two global powers.

The American finance chief described the Chinese decision "economic coercion" and "a international production power grab."

Asked about accepting the American proposal to participate in its dispute with the Asian nation, the Chancellor said she was "very concerned" by Chinese measures and urged the Beijing authorities "to avoid restrictions and limit trade."

She said the action was "damaging for the world economy and generates further headwinds."

"It is my opinion there are areas where we must challenge Chinese policies, but there are also important chances to sell into Chinese markets, including banking sector and other areas of the economy. We've got to get that balance right."

The chancellor also stated she was collaborating with G7 counterparts "regarding our own critical minerals strategy, so that we are reduced dependence."

NHS Drug Pricing and Funding

Reeves also recognized that the price the National Health Service spends on drugs could increase as a result of ongoing discussions with the Trump administration and its pharmaceutical firms, in return for reduced taxes and investment.

A number of the world's largest pharmaceutical manufacturers have said recently that they are either delaying or abandoning projects in the UK, with some attributing the insufficient payments they are obtaining.

Recently, the Science Minister said the price the NHS pays for medicines would need to rise to prevent businesses and drug research funding leaving the United Kingdom.

Reeves stated to media: "We have seen due to the payment system, that clinical trials, new drugs have not been available in the United Kingdom in the extent that they are in other European countries."

"Our aim is to ensure that individuals receiving treatment from the NHS are able to obtain the best essential treatments in the world. And so we are reviewing these issues, and... seeking to attract more funding into Britain."
